Ranking inside Google AI Overviews: a 2026 strategy for UK businesses

How to structure pages, schema and FAQs so Google AI Overviews actually cite your site — a practical playbook from a multi-channel marketer in Somerset.

Google AI Overviews now sit above the classic blue links for a growing share of UK queries. As a multi-channel marketer at Queen's College, Taunton, here's the structure I'm using to get small-business pages cited in answers — not buried beneath them.

Write the answer first, the article second

AI Overviews extract self-contained answer paragraphs. Put a 40–80 word direct answer to the H1 question immediately under the H1 — no preamble. The rest of the article supports that answer with depth, sources and entities.

Use entity-rich, scannable structure

Short paragraphs. Clear H2s phrased as questions. Bulleted lists for steps. Tables for comparisons. Each H2 should be answerable in one paragraph. Generative systems lift these blocks cleanly when the structure is obvious.

Layer ${SCHEMA} aggressively

Use Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Organization schema on every post. For local pages, add LocalBusiness with sameAs links to your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and Companies House profile — that's how engines verify entity identity.

Earn citations off-site

Reddit, niche forums, podcast transcripts, Substack and YouTube descriptions feed both Google's AIO and Perplexity. A single thoughtful Reddit comment with a link can drive more AIO citations than five guest posts.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI Overviews replace SEO?
No — they sit on top of classic SEO. The pages cited inside AI Overviews are still pages with strong topical authority, schema and structure. Good SEO is now the prerequisite for AI visibility, not an alternative to it.
How do I know if my site is cited in AI Overviews?
Search your priority queries directly, log them monthly, and use tools like Ahrefs' AI Overview tracker. There's no native report in Google Search Console yet.
Does schema markup help with AI Overviews?
Yes — Article, FAQPage and Organization schema make entity extraction reliable, which improves the chance of being cited as a source.
Should I write longer or shorter content for AI search?
Shorter, denser, more structured. Long meandering posts are penalised by generative extraction. Aim for 800–1,400 words with clear sectioning.
