Your Google Business Profile is the single highest-leverage SEO asset most UK small businesses own. It's also the most neglected. Here are the ten mistakes I see most often when auditing Taunton and Somerset businesses.
1–5: setup mistakes
- Wrong primary category (it's the #1 ranking factor in the Map Pack).
- NAP inconsistency between the site, GBP and citation directories.
- No service area set for businesses that travel to customers.
- Hours missing or outdated — Google deprioritises stale profiles.
- Generic business description with no keywords or location.
6–10: ongoing mistakes
- No weekly photo posts — fresh imagery is a soft ranking signal.
- Ignoring reviews, especially negative ones (reply to every one).
- Not using the Q&A section — seed your own FAQs.
- Posting offers/events only quarterly — fortnightly is the floor.
- No UTM tags on the website link — you lose attribution in GA4.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does a Google Business Profile take to rank?
- Initial Map Pack visibility usually appears within 2–6 weeks of a properly set-up profile. Top-3 in a competitive category takes 3–6 months of consistent posts, reviews and citations.
- How many reviews do I need to rank?
- Volume matters less than recency and response rate. 30 reviews with replies in the last 12 months will usually outrank 200 stale reviews from 2019.
- Can I rank a GBP without a physical address?
- Yes — service-area businesses (plumbers, electricians, marketers who travel to clients) can rank without showing an address, provided the service area is set correctly.
- Should I post on GBP every week?
- Yes — at minimum a fortnightly photo or offer post. It's a small but consistent ranking signal and keeps the profile visibly active.
