Your Google Business Profile is the single highest-leverage SEO asset most UK small businesses own. It's also the most neglected. Here are the ten mistakes I see most often when auditing Taunton and Somerset businesses.

1–5: setup mistakes

  1. Wrong primary category (it's the #1 ranking factor in the Map Pack).
  2. NAP inconsistency between the site, GBP and citation directories.
  3. No service area set for businesses that travel to customers.
  4. Hours missing or outdated — Google deprioritises stale profiles.
  5. Generic business description with no keywords or location.

6–10: ongoing mistakes

  1. No weekly photo posts — fresh imagery is a soft ranking signal.
  2. Ignoring reviews, especially negative ones (reply to every one).
  3. Not using the Q&A section — seed your own FAQs.
  4. Posting offers/events only quarterly — fortnightly is the floor.
  5. No UTM tags on the website link — you lose attribution in GA4.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Google Business Profile take to rank?
Initial Map Pack visibility usually appears within 2–6 weeks of a properly set-up profile. Top-3 in a competitive category takes 3–6 months of consistent posts, reviews and citations.
How many reviews do I need to rank?
Volume matters less than recency and response rate. 30 reviews with replies in the last 12 months will usually outrank 200 stale reviews from 2019.
Can I rank a GBP without a physical address?
Yes — service-area businesses (plumbers, electricians, marketers who travel to clients) can rank without showing an address, provided the service area is set correctly.
Should I post on GBP every week?
Yes — at minimum a fortnightly photo or offer post. It's a small but consistent ranking signal and keeps the profile visibly active.
