TL;DR

  • You need GCSE grade 4+ in English and maths, plus a Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Expect a salary of £14k–£22k in year one across Somerset.
  • Best routes: gov.uk apprenticeship register, Apprentago, Multiverse, Estio — and direct cold emails.
  • A one-page portfolio beats grades. Build one before you apply.

1. Make sure you meet the entry requirements

The Level 3 Multi-Channel Marketer standard requires GCSE grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, plus a Level 3 qualification — A-Levels, BTEC, T-Level or NVQ — or equivalent work experience. Most Somerset employers I've spoken to care more about your portfolio and attitude than the exact grades on the paper.

2. Build a one-page portfolio before you apply

Almost no one applying for an apprenticeship at 17 or 18 has a portfolio. That's exactly why building one takes you to the top of the pile. Mock up a brand sheet for a local Somerset business, redesign a homepage in Figma, or write a sample email campaign for a brand you love. Two pages beats no pages.

3. Search the official apprenticeship register

Start at gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship. Filter by "marketing" and your Somerset postcode (TA1 for Taunton, BA20 for Yeovil, TA6 for Bridgwater). Set up email alerts so new listings ping you the day they go live.

4. Talk to training providers directly

Training providers know about roles weeks before they hit the public register. The big ones for Somerset:

  • Apprentago — South West specialists.
  • Multiverse — bigger national agency placements.
  • Estio — strong in tech and digital marketing roles.
  • Somerset Skills & Learning — local council-backed provider.

5. Cold-email the employers you actually want to work for

This is how I got mine. Roughly half the marketing apprenticeships in Somerset never make it to a job board — they get filled by someone who emailed first. Pick 10 organisations you'd genuinely love to work for (schools, agencies, SMEs, charities) and email the marketing lead with a two-paragraph pitch and a link to your portfolio. Three of the ten will reply. One might say yes.

6. Nail the interview by talking about real work

Employers don't expect you to know HubSpot or GA4 on day one. They want to know: can you write, do you notice bad marketing in the wild, can you take feedback? Bring examples of campaigns you love and ones you hate — and be ready to say why.

Frequently asked questions

What qualifications do I need to start a marketing apprenticeship in Somerset?
For a Level 3 Multi-Channel Marketer apprenticeship you typically need GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths. Most Somerset employers also look for a Level 3 qualification — A-Levels, BTEC or T-Level — or equivalent work experience. A small portfolio (one brand sheet or sample campaign) matters more than grades for standing out.
How much do marketing apprentices earn in Somerset?
Most marketing apprenticeships in Somerset pay £14,000–£22,000 in year one. The legal minimum apprentice wage is £7.55 an hour (2026), but Taunton, Yeovil and Bridgwater employers usually pay above that and move you onto the full Living Wage after 12 months.
How long does a marketing apprenticeship take?
The Level 3 Multi-Channel Marketer standard runs 13–18 months including the End Point Assessment. The Level 6 Marketing Manager degree apprenticeship takes a further 3–4 years if you progress straight on.
Where can I find marketing apprenticeships in Taunton, Yeovil or Bridgwater?
Start with gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship filtered to your postcode. Then approach training providers directly — Apprentago, Multiverse, Estio and Somerset Skills & Learning all place marketing apprentices across the county. Finally, cold-email local employers; roughly half the marketing apprenticeships in Somerset never reach a job board.
Can I do a marketing apprenticeship without A-Levels?
Yes. Many providers accept equivalent Level 3 qualifications (BTEC, T-Level, NVQ) or relevant work experience. If you don't have any of those, look at Level 2 Customer Service or Business Administration apprenticeships as a stepping stone — they take 12 months and feed naturally into Level 3 marketing.
