Local SEO is the single highest-ROI marketing activity for most Taunton businesses — and most of it is free. Here's my 20-point 2026 checklist.
Google Business Profile essentials
Claim it. Correct category (specific over generic). Full opening hours including bank holidays. Real photos monthly. Weekly posts. Reply to every review within 48 hours. Enable messaging.
On-site local signals
City in title tags, H1, and meta descriptions where natural. LocalBusiness schema.org with address, phone, geo. Embedded Google map on your contact page. NAP consistent everywhere.
Citations and directories
Yell, Thomson Local, Scoot, industry-specific directories (e.g. Checkatrade for trades). Chamber of Commerce Somerset. Consistency of NAP matters more than volume.
Reviews as the flywheel
Ask every happy customer within 48 hours of purchase with a direct short-link. Aim for 2–5 new reviews per month. Reply to all of them. This alone will out-rank most competitors within a year.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does local SEO take in Taunton?
- First movements within 4–8 weeks, meaningful ranking within 3–6 months. Competitive niches (solicitors, dentists) take longer.
- Do I need a website for local SEO?
- Yes — Google Business Profile alone isn't enough for anything competitive. A basic 5-page site plus GBP is the minimum.
- Are paid citations worth it?
- Selectively. A few high-authority industry ones yes; bulk citation packages no.
- How many reviews do I need?
- 50+ with a 4.5+ average puts you competitively in most Taunton categories. 100+ is a moat.
