You do not need a degree to build a marketing career in the UK in 2026. Here's the roadmap I'd give any school leaver who asked.

Year 1: apprenticeship or entry role

Level 3 Multi-Channel Marketer apprenticeship, or a marketing coordinator/assistant role. Get 12 months of real reps.

Year 2: build a public portfolio

Personal domain, 3 case studies, weekly LinkedIn presence. Public work is the new CV.

Year 3: specialise

Pick one of paid, SEO, lifecycle, brand or content. Depth in one commands higher salaries than surface in five.

Year 4–5: senior or freelance

Senior in-house at £45–£60k, or freelance day rates £300–£500. Both work. Both need public work to sustain.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a degree to be a marketer in the UK?
No. Apprenticeship + portfolio + public work will outperform most degrees for entry-level marketing roles.
How much does a UK marketing apprentice earn?
£14,000–£20,000 in year one, £22,000–£28,000 in year two, £30,000+ post-qualification.
Which specialism pays best?
Paid media and lifecycle/CRM tend to pay highest for young marketers with 3–5 years of results.
How do I get my first marketing job?
Build one live project (a portfolio site with case studies) and lead with it. It out-performs cold applications.
