Why choose an apprenticeship?
A personal answer to why apprenticeships are the most rewarding route for young people, from Jack Frampton, a marketing apprentice in Taunton, first shared with Somerset Careers Hub.

A question commonly asked by my friends. They often say:
- It is not worth the stressful application process
- I would rather have the fun of college and uni
- There is no point working yet if I do not have to
All valid points.
But, I personally disagree.
Why I disagree
Apprenticeships are the most rewarding and valuable thing young people can experience.
- Learning whilst gaining industry experience.
- Gaining knowledge from experts in their fields.
- Missing out on student debt.
- Real life connections and professional experiences.
- Actual projects and contributions that matter.
- Your foot in the door, not only in an industry but also a company that has shaped you to their standards and values.
Yes, it can be hard
Yes, apprenticeships can be hard. Yes, you may feel like your missing out.
The feeling that beats everything
But the feeling of:
- Getting that offer
- Your first day of work
- Learning a new skill
- Being recognised and rewarded
Feel far greater than anything you can get elsewhere.
My answer
Debating an apprenticeship?
Go for it.
Because once you start, you will not look back.

- It depends on the person, but for many careers an apprenticeship gives you paid experience, a qualification and no debt by age 21. University suits people who need a specific degree or the full campus experience.
- What if I feel like I am missing out?
- You will sometimes. But you also gain financial independence, real responsibility and a head start. The trade-off is different, not lesser.
- How do I know if an apprenticeship is right for me?
- If you prefer learning by doing, want to earn straight away, and can see yourself in a specific industry, an apprenticeship is worth serious consideration.
